What is Orlistat?

Orlistat is a small pill that you ingest with your meals - it binds to the fat from your food as it's released in your gut. It's the only prescription medicine licensed in the UK that's clinically-proven to aid weight loss.

Rather than storing all of the fat from your meal into your body, about a third of it stays bound to Orlistat and passes in your stool.

How does it boost weight loss?

You might have heard the phrase before: “calories in vs. calories out”. At the risk of oversimplifying the subject - if we eat less and do more, we'll lose weight.

Orlistat helps your body “eat less” (and lose weight), by discarding a third of the fat that you eat from your meals.

How long does it take to work?

It works straight away with every meal. But this isn’t a crash diet - we expect you to lose around 5% of your starting body weight, every 3 months. This means if you currently weigh 90kg, we’d expect you to lose 4.5kg in 3 months.

With Orlistat, we want you to build life-long habits and lose weight for good; keeping it off for a healthier, more energetic you.

Small changes, big results

Let's say you consume 2400 calories a day and maintain a fat intake of 30% of your total calories. Orlistat would discard around 240 calories, bringing your calorie absorption to 2160 calories.

That difference is equal to 25 minutes of running every day!

Common questions

Orlistat doesn’t interact with alcohol, so it is no more dangerous to drink alcohol while taking these weight loss tablets. However, it’s important to bear in mind that alcohol is highly calorific and may affect your weight loss efforts if you drink it regularly or to excess. Feeling tipsy can also hinder your willpower and lead to snacking.

Orlistat binds to the dietary fat you consume and prevents it from being absorbed, which in turn helps you to lose more weight than if you were dieting and exercising alone. If you do not diet when taking Orlistat and eat high fat, high calorie meals the likeliness is that you will not lose weight and it also increases the chance of unpleasant side effects occurring. Orlistat should be viewed as a 'booster' to your weight loss efforts, helping you to lose up to 50% more weight than you would if you were on a regime of just diet and exercise.

The ingredient, Orlistat, binds to fat from your food as it is released in your gut. Rather than this fat being absorbed into your bloodstream and stored by your body, it stays bound to Orlistat and passes completely through your system. About two thirds of dietary fat remains in your body. Therefore Orlistat helps to reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs meaning you are burning off your existing stores of fat for energy, rather than the fat you are consuming in your diet.

Successful weight loss cannot be achieved solely by just taking Orlistat. It is highly recommended that Orlistat is used alongside a healthy lifestyle. For sustainable weight loss results, it is strongly advised that you alter your diet and lifestyle while taking Orlistat. Not only will low fat meals give better results, but they can also help to reduce the possibility of side effects. Additionally, taking up regular exercise and reducing alcohol consumption will help to accelerate results.

The amount of weight you lose whilst taking Orlistat naturally varies depending on a number of factors including the amount of calories you consume, your exercise levels, your metabolism, your current state of health and your starting weight. For those on a low fat, low calorie diet that are exercising for the recommended 30 minutes, five times per week, we would suggest that you should aim to lose around 1-2 pounds (0.5-1kg) per week.

For adults (18 years and over), the dose of Orlistat is 1 capsule up to three daily, with or up to one hour after fat-containing meals. You should not take more than three Orlistat capsules in a 24-hour period. You do not need to take an Orlistat capsule if you have a meal containing no fat, it will have no effect. Do not take more than one Orlistat 120mg capsule at a time, it will not help you lose any more weight however it does risk causing liver damage which can have severe consequences.

You can expect to see results in 1-3 months; aiming to lose 5% of your starting body weight in 3 months.

Orlistat will bind around 33% of the fat you consume in each meal where you take it with, or up to an hour after, food. As Orlistat is not absorbed into your system, it binds the dietary fat and then passes through you, it does not take time to get in to your system or build up an effect. Although Orlistat starts binding the fat from your meals straight away, this does not necessarily mean you will see weight loss from day 1. Losing weight means that you need to burn more calories than you are consuming. Taking Orlistat will help to lower the calories you are consuming by preventing the absorption of fat but you also need to be burning calories through activity or exercise to tip the scales in your favour.

More questions

Our Orlistat tablets are produced by a leading and well known pharmaceutical manufacturer, prescribed and dispensed to our customers under the guidance of licensed and qualified doctors and pharmacists in a fully-regulated pharmacy to ensure that you receive high quality UK-licensed medicine.

Our Orlistat tablets will normally be manufactured by Teva.

All three treatments (Orlistat capsules, Xenical and Alli) all contain Orlistat as the active ingredient. Although they are all very similar, there are some subtle differences:
  • Orlistat capsules and Xenical both contain 120mg of Orlistat per capsule, whereas Alli capsules only contain 60mg Orlistat.
  • As Orlistat & Xenical are both stronger, they are classed as prescription-only medicines (POM) and must be prescribed by a healthcare professional whereas Alli, which contains less Orlistat, can be bought over-the-counter in pharmacies (subject to completing a short consultation with a pharmacist).
  • Xenical is the original prescription strength (120mg) Orlistat treatment and as such is a branded product. When the patent expired on Xenical, it allowed other companies to make the same treatment under the generic name Orlistat 120mg capsules. Xenical and Orlistat both contain the same ingredients, however Xenical is more expensive as it is a branded product.

We do not advise using other weight loss treatments or tablets, such as GNC or ketones, with Orlistat. The interactions can cause some unpleasant side effects. You should follow a strict regime of diet and exercise whilst taking Orlistat capsules to get the most out of them. You may also consider taking a multivitamin supplement at bedtime to ensure you are still getting all the essential vitamins and minerals required by your body.

Each capsule contains Orlistat 120 mg. Orlistat capsules contain gelatin from bovine sources in the capsule coating.

Orlistat contains bovine gelatin so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

If you do experience side effects from Orlistat they may include abdominal pains, bloating or wind, the urgent need to open the bowels and oily, fatty, or liquid stools. These side effects are most common at the start of treatment and are most likely to occur after eating a high-fat meal. Important: By restricting your intake of dietary fat to less than 15g per main meal you will decrease the chances of these side effects. Other less common side effects when taking Orlistat may include: Rectal pain/discomfort, soft stools, incontinence (stools), bloating (experienced by some people with type 2 diabetes), tooth/gum disorder, irregularity of menstrual cycle, tiredness.

Around 15,000 people in Britain undergo liposuction every year. However, some find that even after liposuction, there is not much change to visceral fat. Visceral fat is a type of body fat that’s stored within the abdominal cavity. It’s located near several vital organs, including the liver, stomach and intestines. It can also build up in the arteries. Taking Orlistat after liposuction may help to reduce visceral fat and lower cholesterol, according to some studies.
